Decorative finishes — specification and technical data

Italian decorative interior finishes, applied by brush, roller, sponge or trowel over a primed and cohesive substrate. These are decorative coatings rather than mineral plasters: specify them for effect and interior wall surfaces, and prime the substrate properly first.

What sits against what, from the substrate outwards. Junctions, movement joints and edge details are project-specific — send us the drawings and we will mark them up.

Decorative finish over a primed substrate

Substrate cohesion governs. Plasterboard always takes an insulating primer.

BUILD ORDER — SUBSTRATE FIRST, IN SEQUENCE Substrate check
Fully cohesive. Where it is not, an insulating primer is applied — always recommended on plasterboard.
 Tiled substrates
Degreased with denatured ethyl alcohol, wide joints point-grouted with Primus Aggrappante, then a smooth even coat of Primus Aggrappante by stainless steel trowel.
 Base
Primus Sabbia or Primus Naturale at 6 – 7 m²/L.
 Finish
Two coats in most of the range, tool and technique by effect.
 Protection
Vetro, Vetro Opaco or Iper Vetro where washability or water repellency is required.

Giorgio Graesan & Friends Gioia Decorative paint A brushed decorative interior paint, applied in two coats with cross-hatch brush strokes over a Primus base. Colour is added on site from the colouring additive, so the panel approval is the specification. Giorgio Graesan & Friends Oro Puro Metallic decorative finish A high-gloss gold decorative finish with strong coverage in a single coat. Applied by sponge, brush, roller or steel trowel depending on the effect, and washable without an additional protective coat. Giorgio Graesan & Friends Oro Bianco Metallic decorative finish The white gold of the Oro pair. Same application latitude and the same one-coat coverage as Oro Puro, in a cooler metallic register. Giorgio Graesan & Friends Euphoria Bianco Marble chips and sequins A heavy decorative finish carrying marble chips and sequins, supplied by weight rather than volume. At 1 m² per kg it is the most material-hungry finish in the range, and quantities need to be taken off carefully. Giorgio Graesan & Friends Euphoria Oro Marble chips and sequins Euphoria in the gold register. Same build-up, same 1 m²/kg coverage, same protective options — the difference is the sequin colour. Giorgio Graesan & Friends Fili di Seta Decorative interior paint A silk-thread decorative paint with the highest coverage in the range at 9 to 10 m²/L. Fully washable once protected, which makes it a candidate for circulation and back-of-house areas. Giorgio Graesan & Friends Minimal Matt decorative interior paint A flat matt decorative paint — the quietest finish in the range, for schemes where the wall is meant to recede rather than perform. Giorgio Graesan & Friends Morbido Tocco Interior paint The one product in the Graesan range with a declared A+ indoor air emissions rating. It dries quickly and needs no lengthy airing before a room is re-occupied, which matters on a fit-out programme. Giorgio Graesan & Friends La Via Lattea Decorative paint A two-coat decorative paint applied by roller or brush, for interior wall surfaces of various kinds. Protective coating is optional and depends on the exposure.

Where not to use it

Specifying a material into the wrong place is the most expensive mistake on a finishes package. These are the limits we will raise at review whether or not they are asked about.

  • Interior wall surfaces. Not a floor finish and not a wet-area finish.
  • Plasterboard substrates require an insulating primer without exception.
  • Washability depends on the protective coat being specified and applied.
  • Colour is added on site from the colouring additive, so batch consistency depends on the applicator — approve a panel.
  • Residues must be dried and handled as special waste.
Specification clause

Decorative finish: Giorgio Graesan [product] in colour [ref], applied in two coats over Primus [Sabbia / Naturale] base at 6–7 m²/L on the primed substrate, to the approved sample panel. Insulating primer to all plasterboard substrates. Protective coat of [Vetro / Vetro Opaco / Iper Vetro] where scheduled. Supply and application by Conmarble Natural Finishes.

Related systems

Clay plaster An unfired clay plaster, pigmented through the body, applied by hand over a primed substrate. It is a finish, not a waterproofing layer: it breathes, buffers humidity and is repaired rather than replaced. Interior walls and ceilings only. Primers and sealers The primer and the sealer are part of the system, not an accessory to it. Most finish failures we are called to inspect trace back to the wrong primer, or a sealer applied before the substrate was dry enough. Both carry their own data sheets and both belong in the specification.
